| In
2005, a group of concerned community members in Irvine, CA came together to talk
about the millions of children
in Africa whose lives have been impacted by the AIDS
pandemic and how we might help. Like many Americans, we felt compelled to do
something. We were also discouraged by the fact that
far too often, large percentages of the donations given to help these
children never actually reaches them. We wanted to
help and we wanted to know that our support would truly make a difference in the lives of the
children. So, we created The Africa Project,
an all volunteer non profit agency working to support
children in one village in Africa.
The
Africa Project is truly a grass roots, community based
effort. The
Africa Project is governed by an all volunteer
Board of Directors.
Our board members and volunteers manage the
daily operations of the organization. As an all
volunteer organization, we are able to direct all of the the money we raise
to support direct services on the ground in Nkandla.
The Africa Project
has clearly defined Vision, Mission and
Principles that guide the decision making processes of
the organization.
Finally, The Africa Project,
recognizing that the social issues in Africa are complex,
has identified three priority areas to ensure that we remain
focused on our goal of supporting programs and projects that
directly benefit children:
Health Care
Food & Emergency Aid
-
The Africa Project is committed to providing a protein based meal for the more than 800 students
at Velangaye High School each
school day.
-
The Africa Project also provides support for emergency food aid for child headed
families and others in desperate need.

Education
-
The Africa Project also provides support for school uniforms and school supplies
for children in need.
-
The Africa Project supports the development of school gardens.
-
The Africa Project is also interested in
implementing an “Adopt a School” program where
likeminded individuals, schools and community groups
work together to support a specific school in Nkandla.
NOTE: There are 126 elementary and 40 high schools in
Nkandla... all in desperate need of support!
