Summer of 2007 Fire
and Wind - In August, 2007, hurricane force winds
whipped across Nkandla, spreading fires over the grasslands
and destroying hundreds of homestead. Two people were
killed during the storm. Here at home, the Red Cross
would have responded but in Nkandla, the Red Cross does not
exist. Instead, a group of local officials, health
care providers, law enforcement personnel coordinated
efforts to provide emergency aid and assess the damage.
Eric, Debbie and Stephanie traveled with the emergency
response teams to some of the most remote areas of Nkandla.
